Bulb Shape

A blub shaving brush is bound in such a way that the brush hairs become shorter and shorter towards the outside. The shorter hairs support the inner longer hairs. This gives the shaving brush more backbone (a higher strength when shaving) and allows a more controlled application.

Fan shape

A fan shaped shaving brush has outer hairs that are similar in length to the inner hairs of the knot. Therefor more hairs are in direct contact with the skin. A fan shaped brush head also allows more soap to be absorbed, which is beneficial for lathering the face.

Flat Shape

A flat shaving brush has longer outer hairs than inner hairs of the knot. This makes them especially suitable for foaming up soap. However, a flat shaped head has less backbone than a bulb shaped head.
